Neurodivergent Thinkers
Understanding and Building a Relationship with Yourself
Neurodivergent Affirming Therapy
At Mind Moving Therapy, our therapists utilize a cognitive behavioral therapy approach to help clients gain a deeper understanding of their own minds. We act as guides, companions, and allies, aiding our clients in navigating their emotions, thoughts, and experiences. Our therapists are dedicated to affirming the full spectrum of neurodiversity, recognizing and celebrating individuals whose minds operate in unique ways.
To further affirm the neurodivergent experience, our therapists engage in continuous education and use language that is clear, non-judgmental, and aligned with current academic and applied thinking. We prioritize using terminology that respects our clients' preferences, recognizing that language shapes self-perception. Emphasizing talents and strengths, rather than focusing solely on challenges, empowers individuals to recognize their potential and advocate for themselves. Moreover, the language and tone we use aim to reduce stigma and misconceptions about neurodivergence. By promoting understanding and acceptance, we challenge harmful stereotypes and foster inclusivity, helping clients build a positive sense of self and confidence in their abilities.
Collaboration between therapist and client is crucial in affirming the neurodivergent experience. We work hand in hand with our clients, valuing their expertise, experiences, and preferences as equal partners in the therapeutic process. This collaborative approach fosters empowerment and self-sufficiency, enabling clients to take an active role in their treatment plan.
Our commitment to being neurodivergent-affirming therapists reflects our belief in the inherent worth and dignity of all individuals. We view neurodiversity not as a deviation from the norm but as a beautiful expression of the rich tapestry of human experience. Through our efforts, we strive to create a therapeutic environment where neurodivergent individuals feel truly seen, heard, and valued.

Neurodiversity acknowledges that neurological differences, such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, OCD, and others, are natural variations of the human brain, not deficits to be cured. Our goal is to honor the richness and complexity of human experience, where every individual brings their own strengths, challenges, and perspectives. Adopting a neurodivergent-affirming approach, we create a safe and inclusive environment where clients feel validated, understood, and empowered to embrace their authentic selves.

Unlike traditional therapy, which may focus on general normalization and universal validation, neurodivergent affirming therapy commemorates and highlights the strengths and unique assets of neurodivergent thinkers. This approach utilizes validation, acceptance of self, feelings of empowerment, and aims to establish a supportive therapeutic setting where clients may feel understood and valued.
-
In a neurodivergent affirming therapy session, our clients may expect a warm, empathetic, and judgement-free therapeutic setting. Our therapists work collaboratively with our clients to ensure their voices are heard when creating a unique and strengths-based treatment plan. Therapy sessions are tailored to our client’s individual needs and challenges, ensuring that therapy provides a supportive and comfortable treatment process.

Our therapists are required to seek out continuous education and training as part of their licensure requirements. Our practice shares training opportunities that are specific to working with neurodivergent populations, including Autism and ADHD, and learning about neurodivergent experiences. Our therapists share information with each to stay informed about the most up to date research and best practices in the field of neurodivergent affirming therapy. Best practices includes learning about the impact of societal stigma, preferences within the neurodivergent perspective, and utilizing a strengths-based approach in their practice. In addition to learning about best practices, Mind Moving Therapy clinicians stay current in their efforts to read literature on the topic and offer one another case consultations in order to put their best foot forward in the therapeutic setting.

Validation, where it is appropriate, is crucial to the therapeutic process; it acknowledges and respects the client's feelings and perspective. This helps to build rapport and foster a sense of safety and trust between a therapist and client. For neurodivergent individuals, validation may aid in challenging feelings of stigmatization and misunderstanding, promoting self-esteem building and confidence. It is a foundational element in both our individual therapy and in the group therapy setting. Peer to peer validation in the group therapy room further supports positive therapeutic outcomes.
